Marion, KY Crawlspace Repair Project

Challenge

Mr. and Mrs. J have been dealing with a wet crawlspace for several years.  They told Damon, their Healthy Spaces design specialist, that the crawlspace was wet off and on, depending on the time of year and the amount of groundwater present, but that the usual state was moist to very wet.  They had recently discovered mold in the carpet pad and carpet of the livingroom and upon remediation, discovered the mold was growing in the subfloor.  When they had the crawlspace examined, they realized just how bad the wet crawlspace was.  They asked Damon to come in and design a crawlspace system that would remove the standing water, reduce the relative humidity, and create a safer space for storage.  They wanted the crawlspace dry and bright, not to mention clean and usable!  

When the Healthy Spaces installation team arrived on site, they discovered a large amount of standing water in the crawlspace, directly under the livingroom.  The water was 6" deep in some parts and as they began to pump the water out, they discovered an old, broken sump pump in the flooded area, not to mention lots of moldy debris.

Solution

The solution was to use the new sump pump, the SuperSump, right away to remove the standing water.  Next, the team began their mold remediation. After the mold was removed from the crawlspace and the water was pumped out, the team was able to install the drainage system and connect it to the sump pump system.  They constructed a durable discharge system and directed the water far down the sloping backyard to make sure that the pumped out water wasn't just cycling back into the crawlspace after removal.  Finally, the Healthy Spaces installation team installed the CleanSpace system throughout the 1432 square foot crawlspace, including bringing the vapor barrier up the walls and properly anchoring it there.
