Air circulates in homes from top to bottom. As much as half the air in your first floor may have first come from your crawlspace. So any mold spores or contaminants in your basement or crawlspace will migrate into the air you breathe in your home.

Foundation vents make it worse. During hot summer months, hot and humid air flows into the crawl space. As that hot air hits with metal ductwork underneath floorboards, condensation forms. Over time, this can lead to rust. Then, the ducts that circulate air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter time will add particles of rust into the air you breathe.
