Newburgh Basement Flooding Leads to Mold
Challenge
The homeowners for this Newburgh, IN home contacted Healthy Spaces because their finished basement flooded in December due to unseasonable rains. The flooding had occurred along the perimeter of the basement at the joint between the walls and floor and had destroyed the carpet in virtually every room. The homeowners were gone for the holidays and by the time that they had returned, there was mold growing in the basement. The challenging aspects of the project included protecting the family from mold spores, protecting furniture and fixtures from mold during the remediation process, and preventing further water intrusion into the basement.
Solution
Healthy Spaces was able to perform a comprehensive mold remediation treatment of the entire basement, as well as installing a Waterguard basement waterproofing system to keep the basement dry all the time!
Once the mold remediation is complete, Waterguard is installed.
Waterguard is an engineered french drain system that will not clog due to soils under the basement floor. There are large holes in the back to accept water, but allow sediment to settle out. Also, the Waterguard system has a specialized wall flange feature that can catch wall moisture as well, while still allowing the finished basement look.
The Waterguard system was attached to a Zoeller pump with battery back up and exclusive Waterwatch Alarm system that will alert the homeowners to pump or power problems before the water level gets too high. The most exciting feature of the pump system is the lid. It's airtight with a drain to capture any emergency water from a broken pipe or overflowing washing machine, but the lid also reduces noise, prevents objects from falling in and keeps moisture, insects, and odors from getting out.
