Mount Vernon, IN Crawlspace made into Healthy Space
Challenge
The homeowners in this Mount Vernon, IN home are allergy sufferers. In order to better relieve their allergy symptoms, they elected to encapsulate their dirt crawlspace to create a conditioned space with a lower relative humidity. A lower humidity level in the crawlspace would reduce mold growth, lower the incidence of pest infestations, and decreases dust
mite-related problems. The less moisture that there is in a crawlspace, the less appealing environment a crawlspace is to creatures like termites, ants, mice, crickets, and other creepy crawlies. These homeowners had previously noticed that they had mice droppings in the crawlspace, which can carry a variety of viruses according to the CDC, and they wanted to insure that their home was isolated from pests, moisture, and mold.
The homeowners met with Damon, a crawlspace encapsulation specialist from Healthy Spaces, regarding their concerns and their desire to create a healthier home.
Solution
When Damon examined the crawlspace, he noted that the space was experiencing seasonal groundwater intrusion and noted staining from that intrusion on the block foundation walls. He discussed several options with the homeowners regarding creating a more energy efficient crawlspace as well as reducing humidity. Ultimately, the homeowners elected to have CleanSpace installed over SilverGlo insulation, along with a Sanidry CX dehumidifier and a perimeter drain system tied to a SuperSump Sump Pump system with discharge line. Finally, they decided to have a Turtl crawlspace door installed to create a lasting, energy efficient crawlspace.
