Vine Grove, KY Crawlspace Restoration and Encapsulation
Challenge
These Vine Grove, KY homeowners suffered with sagging, squeaking floors and a damp crawlspace for years. After struggling to repair their crawlspace using black plastic and other outdated materials, the homeowners contacted Healthy Spaces for a permanent position. The first challenge in this situation was the uneven grade in the crawlspace and the remains of several failed crawlspace repair projects. The dirt floor was riddled with half collapsed trenches, old drainage pipe, and fragments of various vapor barrier materials that had disintegrated.
Solution
Damon with Healthy Spaces met with the homeowners and viewed the crawlspace to create a comprehensive repair plan. The first step in the repair plan was a debris removal and regrade. Next, a full mold remediation treatment was performed. After that, 6 Smartjacks were installed to replace the failing block concrete support posts that were no longer keeping the floor level. The installation crew also installed 2700 sq ft of CleanSpace to seal the crawlspace off from outside air. The final step to finish up the crawlspace encapsulation and repair was to install a Turtl crawlspace door. The Tutrl door is comprised of heavy, durable plastic that will not warp or distort with moisture and sun exposure. It will keep out the rainwater that had previous flowed in the crawlspace access when it rained.
The homeowners were thrilled with their "extreme crawlspace makeover" and have noticed warmer floors on the main level and less crawlspace odor when the furnace kicks on. After they have their HVAC system cleaned, they believe that the smell will be gone and they will see significant savings on heating costs.
UPDATE: The homeowners had their furnace serviced on 12/15/14. The technician discovered the filter was actually moldy because of the previous water intrusion into the crawlspace, where the furnace is located. Now that the crawlspace is properly protected, that won't happen again. The homeowners report no more smell!
